Day 9 – King Richard

It’s become a bit harder to experience new things when you’re quarantining at home. Thankfully, my symptoms are not severe today that I can at least enjoy a new movie.

King Richard is a biopic about Serena and Venus Williams’s father, Richard Williams, and his life plan for his daughters that shaped their careers in becoming tennis legends.

The only thing I heard about this movie was Will Smith’s incredible acting. It got 90% on Rotton Tomatoes so I didn’t think it could be that bad.

My thoughts: the acting was incredible. The overall movie was good and I would recommend watching it. I don’t have bad words about it. I kind of felt like the movie left me with more questions: firstly, how accurate is it? I know the Williams family approved of the film so there’s some truth to it. How/why did Richard Williams pick Serena and Venus to be the “tennis superstars”? Did he “see the potential” in them that he didn’t see in his other 3 daughters? How I would feel if I had a strict Olympic-level athletic upbringing? My whole identity would be an athlete. But as we all know, sports careers don’t last forever, so who would I be after that?
