Since I saw P!nk do it at the American Music Awards in 2017, I’ve wanted to try an aerial class. It progressed into another experience that got pushed aside.
The description for this class reads, “Sling is a single point hammock where you will learn how to create beautiful shapes and flows whole flying through the air. Sling will condition your total body while teaching you to balance and control as you spin in a beautifully colored silk. This class is best suited for those new to the aerial sling apparatus.”
There are several types of aerial classes offered, this class was suggested for beginner aerialists.
No surprise, the class was full when I arrived. It started with some stretching and warm up yoga. Typically yoga studios and fitness centers provide towels and yoga mats but due to COVID, you have to provide your own, which is all stated when you purchase the class. After warming up, we partnered up then jumped right into the basics of how to hold the sling (Sling? Sheet? Hammock? I think it’s all the same) and how to pull yourself up. For the record, I have zero upper body strength. All of my strength lies within my legs. “All” being used as a loose term since they still aren’t very strong. Two exercises later, and we’re already learning how to flip backwards. My partner was doing really well, she was flowing through all the motions. I knew it wasn’t easy, but her rhythm made it look effortless. She said this was her third class after she had a previous unrelated injury. My technique was more “scared baby dear learning to walk”. The first two exercises I was not able to trust my body and the apparatus. You could see the fear in my lack of technique. By the third exercise, when almost everyone else was able to let go of their fears and flip, I had an “f— it” moment, gave myself an extra push, and had my first solo flip. Woo hoo!

From there, I was able to flip, hang, weave, hide, and stretch with the sling. I was definitely not graceful. I was just happy that I did it!
All video and pictures were asked to be withheld until the end of class. I asked my partner if she wanted me to video her, then she returned the favor. She was graceful. She looked like a pro knowing all the right angles. I knew my moves were not going to be as graceful but I did not know that my black leggings had diminished to the point of see through. I’m an all black everything kind of girl and the day I happen to wear white underwear was today. Obviously not the best choice. So, today was also the day I figured out that my leggings were on their last legs, pun intended. Next time I take this class, I will be double checking the opacity of my pants. My suggestion is for you do the same. 😅
Obviously I’m no P!nk, but definitely something I would return to and better my skills and gracefulness.
